    Sunday Roast

    DSC00116

I had my first Sunday Roast on a Sunday! With absolutely no idea what it is, Richard and Ai Wei drove me to Otterspool after cleaning up in church. Actually, we never cleaned up except for Richard. The girls were actually M.I.A.ing in Chung Hwa Supermarket. Good job Richard! ;) Back to the point, Otterspool is gorgeous! The place faces the Mersey river which flows into the Irish sea. Lovely place to go jogging. The pub where we ate had a gorgeous view of the river and although according to Richard, the Sunday Roast could have been better, I was really quite satisfied with my turkey roast. It came with cranberry sauce, roast potatoes, vege and YORKSHIRE PUDDING! I didn't have to wait till SF retreat to eat Yorkshire pudding ha ha. Hmm... both didn't turn out like I expected esp the pudding which I thought was sweet but I like my meal overall and wouldn't mind having Sunday Roast on other days again.

    Where's my black hole?!?!?!?!!!

Today I will tell you all why OSCE from today onwards will stand for Obloquy, Stupidness, Cuckoo and Embarrassment. This is the account of my smooth sailing, first ever practical examination in the UK which became disjointed at Station 17. BHP stands for Biggest Head Prawn by the way.

Examiner: Hello! Have a seat (points to seat infront of patient)
So! You both know each other! That's nice.
*I look up and to my horror, find out that V, a 2nd year student I got to know from Msian Soc was my patient*
Right, today please show me how you will measure the patients blood pressure.
*So I started off, introducing myself and asking for consent etc. I then start to put on the cuff on V's arm*

V : (in a very soft whisper) my name and date of birth?
BHP : Oh oops, right can I have your full name and date of birth please?
    Examiner : Hmm.. ok

*I have now fixed the cuff and started inflating when I hear CCCCRRRRRAAAAAAAAA and find that the cuff is unravelling*
BHP : Oh no... Sorry can I repeat it again?
*V was giving me a funny look but I proceeded to deflate the cuff which stayed stubbornly inflated and repeated the thing from the start*

    *And again, it went CCCCCRRRRRAAAAAAAAAA*

BHP : Mr Examiner, it seems that something is wrong with the cuff. Is there another one I can use?
Examiner : Oh really? Yeah, there's another one below the tray.

*V is giving me a very weird look now but I ignore him*

BHP : Sorry, I'll need to fasten this on you again.
    V : Its okay.

*And I pump and it went CCCRRRAAA so pump-CCCRRAAA, pump-CCCRRAAAAAA, pump-CCCRRRAAA. By this time, I was too flustered and decided to proceed even though the cuff looked like a big sausage on V's arm*

BHP : I am now going to estimate the blood pressure and then listen for korotcoff sounds
Examiner : Ok. I'll listen too

*So there was the two of us listening vainly for V's heart sounds not just once but TWICE*

BHP : Sorry Mr Examiner. I couldn't hear anything.
Examiner : Yeah I know. Oh well, this shows you need more practice. You know that don't you?
    BHP : Yeah, I'm sorry...
V : I think this sphygmomanometer is new to her
Examiner : Oh you haven't practiced before this? Even still...
    BHP : I'm so sorry!

*While wondering what the h%$# was wrong with the sphygmomanometer, I proceeded on to the rest of the 13 stations*

The funny thing was that I realised my mistake after pondering about it for 10 stations and at Station 27, I knew just what happened (which probably all of you know by now). Thank God it was a rest station and I could laugh and cry all I want. I actually prayed that somewhere, somehow, a black hole will appear and suck me up. So yeah... I've got to find a good wall to bang myself against. By the way, I've also wished V the best in his future since I'll never be able to meet him face to face ever again! How can a 3rd year medical student put the a BP cuff the opposite side up??? Where is my black hole AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
